Thorsmork, Fjallabak, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, South Shore
5 day private family tour . 5 day private family tour ccccccccccccccccccccccc
From Highlands to Highlights
This adventure takes you seriously off-road and into the wilderness of the Icelandic highlands and back into some of the most famous sights of Iceland.
This is an adventure for those who want an adventure off the beaten path to experience the powerful forces of Icelandic nature. As we travel by steep mountains and glaciers, splash through rivers and streams, pass mysterious caves, giant boulders and go through lunar-like landscapes. You will probably feel like you are on another planet most of the time!
After descending from the Highlands, we make sure that you don’t miss the highlights of South Iceland. The second half of the trip along the south coast is spent visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, Reynisfjara Beach, Dyrholey, Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and more…
DAY 1: Thórsmörk – Valley of Thor
We set out in our super jeep and travel along Iceland’s scenic coastal highway towards the amazing Thórsmörk Canyon.
First stop is two of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland: the famous Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, which we can hike behind. Right next door we have the “secret” fairytale-like Gljufrabui Waterfall, which is hidden inside the cliff.
As we drive off the asphalt road onto the bumpy gravel road we head into another world. Thorsmork is known as the Valley of the Norse Thunder God: Thor. Known for its beauty and magic scenery.
We drive along Krossá River into the aftermath of the famous Eyjafjallajokull Volcanic eruption that stopped all air traffic in 2010. You will see enormous flood planes and volcanic rocks and black ash scattered everywhere. The powers of nature are visible and very strong here.
You will also see what is left of Gigjokull Glacier, which is an outlet of the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier that covers the volcano. Here we stop at the remains of a glacial lagoon below the glacier of Gigjokull.
We stay the night at the cosy Volcano Huts.
DAY 2: Fjallabak Nature Reserve
We set off to go deeper into the highlands and Fjallabak Nature Reserve, exploring the unbeaten path of Fjallabaksleið. The scenery here is truly stunning, colourful and out of this world. You will see colourful mountains and terrain like no other.
You will stop at the geothermal hot spring of Strútslaug to bathe literally in the middle of nowhere. A fantastic experience made by nature!
We continue through the lunar-like landscape towards the ring road 1 to stay the night at Hotel Laki.
DAY 3: Glacier Lagoon, Glacier Beach & Glacier Hike
Today we will visit the famous Jökulsarlon – also known as the Glacier Lagoon. Here you see the ever-changing icebergs in white and blue in the ice-cold lagoon – on most days we see seals and birds playing in the water. It has become a famous film location for Hollywood movies fx James Bond (Die Another Day and A View to Kill).
To get the best view of the massive icebergs and glacier, we will go sailing on the lagoon in a high-powered Zodiac inflatable boat. We will whizz across the lagoon and when go almost all the way up to the glacier.
After this adventure we continue to the stunning glacier beach aka the crystal beach. Here you can touch the ancient icebergs and shoot amazing up-close photographs. This is a perfect place to take a moment meditate on how stunning our planet actually is.
Next stop is one of the most beautiful glacier outlets in Iceland: Svinafellsjokull. Here we’ll put on our ice spikes, helmets and grab an axe to do a glacier walk on the white and blue ice, which is a mind-blowing experience. You’ll really feel the forces of nature when you walk on the ancient ice, look into deep crevasses, and listen to the sounds of the glacier.
We head back to Hotel Laki for the night.
DAY 4: South Shore Classic
Today you will see black beaches, basalt columns, huge waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers, as we drive along the famous South Shore and stop at some of the most popular Icelandic sights.
First is Laki Lavafield, the second largest lava field in Iceland. With its green, green fluffy moss it looks like something taken out of a fairy-tale. Here you will probably better understand why Icelanders still believe in trolls and hidden people.
We will, of course, also stop by the powerful Reynisfjara Beach black pebble beach with its basalt formations and columns that have inspired many landmarks like Hallgrims Church, Harpa music hall and our National Theatre.
Then we continue to the postcard-perfect Skogafoss Waterfall with its rainbows and overwhelming power.
Last stop is the newly opened Lava Center where we will learn everything about volcanoes and their immense powers and how they have and are still shaping Iceland.

We are family of 4 (kids 12&10) who travel a lot and are always looking for new adventures off beaten path. This time we booked 3 days private tour with Goecco and we had just a dream vocation! Our driver guide Atli was the best guide we ever had. He met us at the airport at 6am (even though Goecco warned us that earliest pick up was 9am). His knowledge of the places he showed us, his constant attention to every detail, his concern about our safety- and about our fun- was truly one of a kind.
This man is a walking encyclopedia- he told us so much about the history of Iceland, glaciers, volcanoes, even types of rocks we came across- and kids loved his stories about trolls and old heroes! Atli went above and beyond taking us to more places than we ever dreamed to see- and doing his best to beat the crowds (successfully so!).
In spite of busy Christmas vocation week he made us feel that we were alone in the beautiful wonderland of Iceland- we found ourselves in an icy cave with waterfall, listened to the glacier slowly moving in the dark of the night and hiked up the glacier where there was no one- just sun, wind and ice… truly unforgettable experience! Atli’s kindness and sense of humor made us feel that we knew him for a long time- and we are looking forward coming to Iceland again in summer and hopefully see our friend again.
We would give Goecco and our tour guide Atli 6 stars if we could for our fabulous private tour of South Iceland. Understanding that a private tour is not for everyone, we still think the value was incredible as we did so many things we never otherwise would have or could have without the flexibility of being on our own, combined with our guide Atli’s enthusiasm to show us every nook and cranny the South coast has to offer.
We saw all the popular tourist sites mentioned on Goecco’s website and then made countless stops in between and beyond that only an experienced guide would be able to show us. We modified the itinerary/order of activities on the fly based on the weather and even went to the same place twice if we could get better pictures.
Goecco was extremely responsive and honest about cost and options all the way through the process and they were able to accommodate specific requests – like fitting in a glacier snowmobiling excursion on the last day. Most important to the experience was our guide Atli, who went out of his way time and time again to share the beauty and culture of Iceland with us every step of the way. “No” was not in his vocabulary and even the little things he did made the biggest difference (from allowing us to use his phone as a mobile hotspot while on the road to making sure we had plenty of drinks and snacks for the longer drives).
He shared all of the photos he took over our three days immediately after the tour and we look forward to staying in touch with him about Iceland and beyond. Our thanks again to Goecco and Atli for an amazing experience.

I want to start off saying how great the guides and staff of goecco were.they were both knowledgeable and fun. Talking with other travelers to Reykjavík, who used other tour companies, I am glad I decided to use goecco.
We went on a tour of Thorsmork, or the Valley of Thor. Just by the name itself I was all in.
We started the tour at hallsgrimskirkja church. Which if you are in Reykjavik you have to see! The ride out was nice and we even stoped for coffee. The views from thorsmork were absolutely breathtaking! Hiking between glaciers and taking in the landscape was fantastic.
The highlights for me were seljalandsfoss waterfall, and the black sand beach. If you are lucky enough you can go see a secret waterfall hidden in a cave by seljalandsfoss. Words can not describe how magical it was! If you you are in Reykjavik do yourself a favor and book with goecco!!
This tour was by far the best thing I have ever done. I travel quite a bit for leisure and
I usually don’t do tours. The few I have done were structured and a bit impersonal. NOT so here. From the minute he picked us up Atli treated us to a 5 star tour of the best of Iceland. We saw things that I never would have riding around on my own. He told us fantastic stories about Iceland from growing up there. He answered all our questions.
Each time he took us to a new place he was almost as excited to show it to us as we were to see it. The best part about this tour is that we didn’t have to drive back to Reykjavik at the end of the day but stayed in southeast Iceland so got to see much more. When I first looked at the tour I thought it was too high but if you add up 2 nights in a hotel, dinner and breakfast, and three different days of tours in Iceland it will be more than this tour and it won’t be half the fun

Goecco is the best tour we have ever done! They really know how to make Iceland come alive for you. We (my 11 year old granddaughter and I) went on their Chasing Ice expedition and LOVED it. We hiked on the largest glacier in Europe, walked behind waterfalls, saw icebergs in a lagoon, visited a black sand beach, slept at an old boarding school, ate dinner with all the other wonderful travelers and with our guides and the owners of Goecco!
They provided all the equipment (ice axes, crampons, helmets, etc.) and made sure each of us was well versed in how to use these items. Our guide, Joi, was fantastic! He added the personal touch to all we saw and did. Arnar and Steiner were also there at each stop to help point out things to see and help with everything we needed. All three of these gentlemen made this tour so much better.
We were paired up with quite an eclectic group, young people from Dubai, India and Brazil, a middle aged man from Canada an then an 11 year old and a grandma from the USA. We all bonded quickly and are keeping in touch via facebook and instagram. We met the owners of Goecco at the boarding school for dinner, conversation and laughter. Jonas and Christina are warm, wonderful people and their “mini viking” (2 year old Solvieg) is adorable! We ate, we laughed, we shared, and enjoyed the evening. After dinner, we all wrapped up in wool blankets to go outside and watch for the aurora borealis (northern lights). We were not disappointed!
The next day we were off on more adventures, and then the trip back to Reykjavik. This holiday will be in our hearts and minds for a very long time to come. Thank you Jonas, Christina, Joi, Steiner, Arnar and all our new friends for making this the BEST.TOUR.EVER!!!
